St Conval’s Cemetery:
Both the Diocese and Parish have been asked by a number of people about setting up a fund after the recent vandalism of the graveyard which resulted in a number of gravestones being badly damaged or destroyed and the large Crucifix also being set on fire and badly scorched.
A number of well-intentioned people have set up independent fundraising sites on our behalf but we would prefer if any donations were made through our official charities fund using the QR code below or via the link on the diocesan website for the ‘St Conval’s Cemetery Vandalism Fund’.
We can then liaise with the owners of the lairs and fund the necessary repairs to the gravestones.
All money donated to the fund will be distributed to the families and if necessary used to refurbish the scorched crucifix which was also set on fire by the perpetrator.
We really appreciate your support and generosity at this difficult time for all the families affected.

We pray for those who have died recently:

Hugh Stewart, Mary McLaughlin, Brian Brady

We pray for the anniversaries of:

St Michael, the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.   May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who wander through the world for the ruin of souls. Amen.
Statement from Susan Purdie, the District Commissioner for Barrhead, Neilston & Uplawmoor:

As you know, Girlguiding runs in the church hall on a Tuesday and Thursday night.
Sadly, the leaders of the Rainbows are having to give up, meaning that after the summer the Rainbows will not be returning unless we can get new volunteers.
I was wondering if it would be possible to ask in your parish bulletin if there would be any interest from female parishioners in volunteering for running Rainbows on a Tuesday evening.
The link for volunteering is https://go.girlguiding.org.uk/join-us/join-as-volunteer/
This will send a request to me and I will contact any potential volunteers.
Thanks in advance - Susan

A further £1,623.80 was raised in gift aid for the Diocesan second collections, which helped the diocese in its work too.
Thank you once again for those of you who were able to Gift Aid your contributions to the work of the diocese.

John Morrison, at 0141 889 2602 or via email at 0141 889 2602 or via email at [email protected].

Summer Fete Saturday 7 June 2025:
Thank you to Annamarie Johnstone and the entire Parish Social Committee and everyone who helped play a part in making our parish fete so successful. God bless every one of you. We had a great turnout for the fete despite overcast skies and everyone who came along had a great time.
We prayed that God would keep the heavy rain away until 2pm, and at 2.15pm the heavens opened up to water the beautiful earth. Thank you, heavenly Father, for listening to our prayers and helping us have a wonderful day for the parish fete. Deo Gratias.
Raffle prizes can be collected from the sacristy after weekend Masses.

John Morrison, at 0141 889 2602 or via email at 0141 889 2602 or via email at [email protected].

Barrhead Young Citizen of the Year Award 2025: The Award was created by our former MP and MSP Rt Hon Jim Murphy and Rt Hon Ken Macintosh back in 2003 and was awarded annually to young people who showed exceptional dedication and service to our community in Barrhead. We are delighted to be restoring this opportunity to recognise our fantastic young people, particularly at a time when we often only hear negative things about them. In order to be nominated the young people should attend school or live in Barrhead and be aged between S1 and 24 years old (the upper limit of the UN definition of a young person). We are seeking nominations where a young person has shown support for the community in different ways for example through their volunteering, their involvement in local organisations, their support for others or an exceptional skill or talent in which they have excelled. There will be one main winner and two runners up. The closing date for nominations is Wednesday 25th June at 9.00am and we will present the award on Saturday 28th June at 10.00am (venue tbc). Nominations can be made online here paulokanemsp.scot/barrhead-young-citizen-of-the-year 2025/ or a paper copy can be requested by calling E Ren Office

Summer Sunday Morning Mass Programme:
As we have done in previous years, once the schools close for summer, there will be one Sunday morning Mass in St John’s at 11:00am. The 10:00am and 11:30am Masses will be merged into one Mass, since many people will be on holiday, which means we will have fewer readers and Eucharistic Ministers and there will be no music ministry.

The 11:00 Sunday Mass will begin on the 29th of June (Feast of St Peter and St Paul).

Normal Sunday morning Mass times will resume on Sunday the 17th of August when schools return.

Diocesan Bulletin:
The Diocesan Communications Commission has launched the Diocese of Paisley Bulletin. The bulletin does not replace individual parish bulletins, but adds to them by allowing news and events from across the diocese to be shared with the wider diocesan community. In order to receive the bulletin each week by email please register your details on the diocesan website at rcdop.org.uk/diocesan-bulletin

Susan Purdie, the District Commissioner for Barrhead, Neilston & Uplawmoor, has asked me to say this:
As you know, Girlguiding runs in the church hall on a Tuesday and Thursday night.
Sadly, the leaders of the Rainbows are having to give up meaning that after the summer Rainbows will not be returning unless we can get new volunteers.
I was wondering if it would be possible to ask in your parish bulletin if there would be any interest from female parishioners in volunteering for running Rainbows on a Tuesday evening.
The link for volunteering is
https://go.girlguiding.org.uk/join-us/join-as-volunteer/
This will send a request to me and I will contact any potential volunteers.
Thanks in advance - Susan

Sick and Retired Clergy - 18th May 2025 Second Collection
We remember our Sick & Retired Priests of the diocese with great love and affection. We have eight retired priests, still active in prayer and witness: one living in Rome, one living in Chile, three in houses/flats throughout the diocese, two in parish presbyteries, and one at the Residence of the Little Sisters. We thank God for the gift of these priests and keep them in our prayers. In 2024 our two special collections raised £41,279 and our Friends Campaign and donations raised £10,736, Gift Aid claims £5,331, rental income £9,695 and donations of £5,978, bringing total income to £73,019.

In 2024 our expenditure was £144,456 made up of retired priests’ allowances £63,330, housekeepers’ wages £11,926, repairs to properties £11,884 medical and nursing home fees £4,082, the Healthcare Trust £18,099, Council Tax £7,285, rental of premises £20,040 and other costs of £7,810.
Although there was a shortfall of £71,437 of income compared to expenditure, this was offset by net (dividend) income (less fees) of £78,910 from the Sick & Retired Priests Investment Fund which was set up over 30 years ago for this purpose.

Your continued support for our retired priests is greatly appreciated.

St Andrew's Parish Church has partnered with East Renfrewshire Good Causes (ERGC) for the past few years and continues to be the main distributor in the Barrhead   and Neilston area. ERGC provide free groceries/toiletries  and all kinds of items (everything from stairgates to laptops!) to local people who are in need in some way. They rely on "frontline workers" such as Monsigner Tormey, to provide referrals using their online form and are currently looking for new referrals.
If you can think of anyone you know who might benefit  from this wonderful (and completely free) service, then please check out their website for the relevant info: Main site = East Renfrewshire Good Causes Examples of their most recent help given = year17second.pdf How to apply = East Renfrewshire Good Causes East Renfrewshire Foodbank Giving Day

We have been asked to participate in a focused giving day for Barrhead by the Action for Churches Barrhead and Neilston on 11th May.  St John’s RC parish has been asked to support this initiative by collecting cans of soup. These can be left in the usual place at the back of the church where we normally collect items for the foodbank. As always, any long-lasting food items and or toiletries can be donations in local supermarkets. If anyone is interested in volunteering please contact Ken at [email protected]
The food bank continues to serve customers every Tuesday between 12pm -2pm and Friday between 2pm -4pm a the corner of Bank St and Lowndes Street .
Thank you for your ongoing support. Fr John

Fatima Vigils at Howwood resume on Monday 12th May
and every 12th of the month until October. Rosary Procession
(round the grounds, weather permitting), Mass, followed by Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, ending with Benediction. In this Holy Year of Hope we will focus on praying for peace in our divided world. The hall opens at 7pm, and the Rosary procession starts at 7.30pm. Tea/coffee available in hall after Benediction. Please consider making this a parish activity for the Holy Year. All welcome.

Parish Renovation Project

I invite everyone to a general meeting for the whole parish in the church at 7pm on Tuesday 6 May.

We will meet with the Parish Priest, Diocesan Finance Director, Diocesan Property Manager, the Project Manager from KSNPM, and the Chairperson of the Parish Pastoral Council, to inform parishioners about how the project could be undertaken, and to allow for questions and suggestions. We would also look at how we would repay the diocesan loan. There will be a format for asking questions.
As a parish community I ask you to pray earnestly for the successful outcome of this enterprise.
Monsignor John Tormey. Parish Priest.
