The Social Committee will be holding its Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 1st September at 7:00pm in the Tearoom.

Millions of Monicas (Tuesday 1st September):
Our Millions of Monicas prayer group meets on the first Tuesday of the month. The next meeting takes place in Saint Charles, Paisley on Tuesday 1st September, from 6:30pm to 7:30pm in the church. Women are invited to gather for one hour of guided prayer, which always includes a Rosary for our children in need of God’s mercy and a return to the practice of their Catholic faith. All women are welcome. Many who come are mothers, grandmothers, aunts, and Confirmation sponsors, following the example of Saint Monica in her perseverance in prayer. The Social Committee is delighted to host an Autumn Classical Concert on Friday 30th October at 7.00pm in the Church Hall.
We are thrilled to welcome performances from Ciara Gaffney, Alasdair Ball and Libby Hunter for what promises to be a wonderful evening of music.
Tickets will be £10 and will go on sale soon.
All proceeds from the concert will go towards the Church Restoration Project, so please come along, enjoy an evening of beautiful music, and support this important cause.

Hall Toilets:
Could all parishioners ensure when using the hall toilets that they are left clean and tidy. Last week, the women’s toilet was in a poor state and had to be thoroughly cleaned after the Vigil Mass. Please ensure also that young children are accompanied when using the facilities.

Volunteers required for Children's Liturgy:
Volunteers are required for the Children's Liturgy. This would involve the Diocesan Safe Recruitment Process, which requires attending Safeguarding training, (usually one meeting of ninety minutes) providing two referees, undergoing a simple ID check and obtaining a PVG for working with children within the Diocese of Paisley. If you are interested, please speak to Fr John or contact Mary Hallan, Parish Safeguarding Co-ordinator at: [email protected].

Diocese of Paisley Clergy Moves and Appointments:
On Friday 28th August, Bishop John announced that Father Joe will move from St John’s, to become Parish Priest of Saint Conval’s in Linwood as well as the chaplain to St Benedict’s High School in Johnstone. The move will come into effect on Friday 18th September. We will really miss Fr Joe in our parish; we thank him for three years of outstanding service and pray for him as he enters the next stage of priestly ministry as a parish priest for the first time..

In this Sunday’s Gospel (Matthew 16:13–20), Jesus asks: “Who do you say that I am?” Peter answers from the heart: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Sharing our faith doesn’t mean preaching at people or having all the answers. It can be as simple as telling someone what Jesus means to us. This week, think about how you would answer Jesus’ question — and look for one small opportunity to share that answer with someone else.

Bishop John Keenan has issued a pastoral letter urging Catholics across Scotland to contact their MPs ahead of the return of the Assisted Suicide Bill to the House of Commons on Friday 11th September. New Seminarian:
We welcome Osvaldo Lopez Figueroa, a seminarian from Mexico who is studying for the priesthood for the Diocese of Paisley. Osvaldo will stay with us for four weeks as part of his pastoral training and experience in a parish. We are delighted that Bishop John has sent Osvaldo to our parish here in St John’s. I am sure you will make Osvaldo feel right at home!

Restoration Works Update:
Photos of the recent work on the roof and windows of the church have been posted on the parish website. You can get a close up of the bell, which in fact was the original bell from the church constructed in 1841, and was preserved after the old church burned down in 1941 due to an accidental fire. We are now into the 15th week of the works on the church which is mainly focused on the outside, while the inside brick dries out. The main work is focused on the windows and gutters and you can see the new membrane that is being put on the gutters with a 20-year guarantee. The insulation (polystyrene beads) which proved problematic has mostly been removed now from the cavity walls. It was bringing damp into the inside walls because of the water ingress from leaky gutters and windows.

We are also now looking at fan assisted heating in the church after a recent infra-red survey showed that the under-floor heating cannot be re-instated. Too much of it has corroded. This week the heating consultants will be looking at a specific fan assisted radiator heating system which will make the church warm at the level of the people who sit in the pews. We continue to pray for the success of this restoration work.

Youth to Lourdes 2027 (Thursday 1st July - Friday 9th July 2027):

New School Term:
We wish all our young people every blessing as they start their new school term this week. A special prayer for all the primary one children starting at St Mark’s and St John’s and also for the new first year students at St Luke’s HS. We also pray for all our teachers and staff in our schools.

Hall Toilets:
Could all parishioners ensure when using the hall toilets that they are left clean and tidy. Last week, the men’s toilet was in a poor state and had to be thoroughly cleaned after the Vigil Mass. Please ensure also that young children are accompanied when using the facilities.

St Vincent de Paul Society:
The SVdP provide spiritual, social and financial support to anyone in need. We visit parishioners of St John’s at their homes or in local care homes. For the tax year 2025-26, the Parish generated £29,866.87 through Gift Aid which demonstrates the immense benefit such a system has for St John’s.

Restoration Works Update:
Photos of the recent work on the roof and windows of the church have been posted on the parish website. You can get a close up of the bell, which in fact was the original bell from the church constructed in 1841, and was preserved after the old church burned down in 1941 due to an accidental fire. We are now into the 15th week of the works on the church which is mainly focused on the outside, while the inside brick dries out. The main work is focused on the windows and gutters and you can see the new membrane that is being put on the gutters with a 20-year guarantee. The insulation (polystyrene beads) which proved problematic has mostly been removed now from the cavity walls. It was bringing damp into the inside walls because of the water ingress from leaky gutters and windows.

We are also now looking at fan assisted heating in the church after a recent infra-red survey showed that the under-floor heating cannot be re-instated. Too much of it has corroded. This week the heating consultants will be looking at a specific fan assisted radiator heating system which will make the church warm at the level of the people who sit in the pews. We continue to pray for the success of this restoration work.

A new Millions of Monicas prayer group is beginning at the parish of Saint Charles Borromeo, Paisley. They will meet on the first Tuesday of the month, starting on Tuesday 4th August, from 6:30pm to 7:30pm in the church. Women from surrounding parishes are welcome to join and gather for one hour of guided prayer, which always includes a Rosary for our children in need of God’s mercy and a return to the practice of their Catholic faith. All women are welcome. Many who come are mothers, grandmothers, aunts, and confirmation sponsors, following the example of Saint Monica in her perseverance in prayer. Pilgrimage for Life Carfin Grotto (Saturday 1st August):
The annual Pilgrimage for Life will take place at Carfin Grotto on Saturday 1st August. Led by Bishop John Keenan, the day offers an opportunity for prayer, reflection and witness to the dignity and sanctity of every human life. The programme includes: 12 noon – Holy Mass, 2pm – Eucharistic Adoration, 2:15pm – Stations of the Cross, 2:45pm – Divine Mercy Chaplet, 3:30pm – Holy Rosary. Families are especially encouraged to attend. All are welcome.

SCIAF Shield 5-a-side football tournament (Saturday 1st August):
SCIAF are encouraging parishes across the Diocese to sign up for this year’s SCIAF Shield. Their annual 5-a-side football tournament held in Shawlands takes place on 1st August. Parishes from across Scotland will be represented and take part in a day focusing on faith, football and fundraising. World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly Carfin Grotto (Sunday 26th July):
Everyone is warmly invited to a special celebration of the World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly at Carfin Grotto on Sunday 26th July. Bishop John Keenan will celebrate Holy Mass at 3pm as we give thanks for the invaluable contribution of grandparents and the elderly to our families, parishes and communities. Pilgrimage for Life Carfin Grotto (Saturday 1st August):
The annual Pilgrimage for Life will take place at Carfin Grotto on Saturday 1st August. Led by Bishop John Keenan, the day offers an opportunity for prayer, reflection and witness to the dignity and sanctity of every human life. The programme includes: 12 noon – Holy Mass, 2pm – Eucharistic Adoration, 2:15pm – Stations of the Cross, 2:45pm – Divine Mercy Chaplet, 3:30pm – Holy Rosary. Families are especially encouraged to attend. All are welcome.

SCIAF Shield 5-a-side football tournament (Saturday 1st August):
SCIAF are encouraging parishes across the Diocese to sign up for this year’s SCIAF Shield. Their annual 5-a-side football tournament held in Shawlands takes place on 1st August. Parishes from across Scotland will be represented and take part in a day focusing on faith, football and fundraising. Millions of Monicas (Tuesday 4th August):
A new Millions of Monicas prayer group is beginning at the parish of Saint Charles Borromeo, Paisley. They will meet on the first Tuesday of the month, starting on Tuesday 4th August, from 6:30pm to 7:30pm in the church. Women from surrounding parishes are welcome to join and gather for one hour of guided prayer, which always includes a Rosary for our children in need of God’s mercy and a return to the practice of their Catholic faith. All women are welcome. Many who come are mothers, grandmothers, aunts, and confirmation sponsors, following the example of Saint Monica in her perseverance in prayer. Fatima Vigil in Howwood (Sunday 12th July):
The Fatima Vigil is held in Christ the King Church, Howwood on the 12th of each month from May to October. The next Vigil will take place on Sunday 12th July. The Vigil begins with a Rosary procession (weather allowing) at 7:30pm, followed by Holy Mass and Benediction. Refreshments are available in the hall afterwards.
Monthly pro-life Mass (Wednesday 15th July):
The monthly pro-life Mass is on Wednesday 15th July at 7:30pm at Holy Cross, 113 Dixon Avenue, G42 8ER. Adoration begins at 6:15pm. Tea in the hall afterwards – all welcome. The celebrant will be Father Alex Strachan.

Relics of Saint Gerard Majella (Saturday 18th July):
The Redemptorists around the world are celebrating the 300th anniversary of the birth of Saint Gerard Majella, an Italian lay-brother popularly invoked as The Mother's Saint. As part of this his relics will be visiting the heart of Edinburgh: Saint Patrick's Church, which was once home to a Redemptorist Community. It will take place on Saturday 18th July, with the entrance of the relics at 10am, time for personal prayer, and a Mass at 12:30pm. The Redemptorists around the world are celebrating the 300th anniversary of the birth of Saint Gerard Majella, an Italian lay-brother popularly invoked as The Mother's Saint. As part of this his relics will be visiting the heart of Edinburgh: Saint Patrick's Church, which was once home to a Redemptorist Community. It will take place on Saturday 18th July, with the entrance of the relics at 10am, time for personal prayer, and a Mass at 12:30pm. The Action of Barrhead Churches (ABC) is pleased to announce that it has organised a picnic in the Cowan Park on Sunday 19th July from 1:00pm-3:00pm. Please bring your own food, games and pray for sunshine!

SCIAF are encouraging parishes across the Diocese to sign up for this year’s SCIAF Shield. Their annual 5-a-side football tournament held in Shawlands takes place on 1st August. Parishes from across Scotland will be represented and take part in a day focusing on faith, football and fundraising. 200 Club Relaunch — Latest News:
A warm welcome to the 20 parishioners who have joined the 200 Club since its recent relaunch – there are now 110 members. But there are still plenty of spaces and numbers available! Please consider supporting the restoration fund, while having the chance to win up to £100 in the monthly draw. Contact Karen McPhee on: 07923 564434 and she will allocate you a number. This number is ESSENTIAL when setting up your monthly payment, to ensure that it goes to the 200 Club Account and that you are included in the draw. Payment is by Standing Order, £5 per month, and should be made on the 18th of the month. The draw will take place at the end of the month and the winners will be published in the bulletin. Prizes can be collected from the sacristy. After three weeks any unclaimed prizes will be added to the Restoration Fund.

Piety Stall, Summer Closure:
The Piety stall will be closed for the summer. The last date will be Sunday 5th July. It will reopen again on Sunday 23rd August. If anyone needs an item over this period, ask Mary Hallan at Mass.

The Men of Saint Joseph (Thursday 2nd July):
The Men of Saint Joseph wish to invite all men over the age of 18 to join them for monthly fellowship meetings, including the rosary and lectio divina. “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” - Proverbs 27:17. Meetings are held on the 1st Thursday of each month.
