Lay Ministries

We always welcome and encourage new members to join any of our Lay Ministry Groups. Some of the Ministries within the church will require adults to undergo a national police check through the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme. For further information, visit The PVG Scheme website.
Sacristans
Sacristans

A sacristan is an officer who is charged with the care of the sacristy, the church, and their contents. In ancient times many duties of the sacristan were performed by the doorkeepers, later by the mansionarii and the treasurers. The Decretals of Gregory IX speak of the sacristan as if he had an honourable office attached to a certain benefice, and say that his duty was to care for the sacred vessels, vestments, lights, etc. Nowadays the sacristan is elected or appointed. Tommy Taylor is the Sacristan and is assisted by John Logue, George Dorrian, and George McGuire.
Readers at Holy Mass
Readers at Holy Mass

The reading of Sacred Scripture at Mass in the responsibility of the members of the parish and a rota of trained readers exists to ensure that the Word of God is proclaimed on both weekdays and Sundays.

However, we require new volunteers to carry out this important role within the church, particularly at the Saturday Vigil Mass and the Sunday evening Mass. If you would like to volunteer your services in proclaiming The Word of the Lord at Holy Mass, please see the contact details below:

Saturday Vigil Holy Mass Readers - Mary Quinn on 0141 881 1727

Sunday 6.30pm Holy Mass Readers - Mary Salernitano 0141 881 3179

Thanks to the great response for Readers we can now have two Readers at most Masses.
Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion
Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion

Being an Extraordinary Minister of the Most Holy Eucharist is an honour and a privilege as well as a conscientious commitment to assist the Priest in the distribution of Holy Communion during Mass and to the wider community.

As an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion of the sick and housebound you carry the love and life of God to them. This is a grave responsibility and at the same time a tremendous privilege as a representative of the Church; to be invited into someone's home bring the Body of Christ to those housebound individuals.

Sunday Tea in the Hall: There is tea and coffee served in the Church Hall every Sunday after 10 o’clock Mass. This is a great opportunity to meet up with friends and family to enjoy a chat. Everyone is welcome, especially volunteers!

There is normally no coffee morning after 12 o’clock Mass. However if anyone is interested in organising one, please contact our Parish Priest on 0141 881 1478 or or send a message via the Contact us page.

Church Cleaning
Saint John's Church is kept spotlessly clean by a dedicated band of volunteers who work every Thursday morning from 8:00-9:30am.
New volunteers are always welcome. If you are able to join this happy group, either go along on a Thursday morning, telephone the Parish House or send a message via the Contact us page to let him know. You will be very welcome!

Church Flowers
The beautiful flower displays that decorate the Sanctuary are created by Marie Goodwin and Julia Docherty.
For floral enquiries please call the Parish House or send a message via the Contact us page.

Church Gardens
The grounds of the Church and house are beautifully maintained by John Anderson, gardener of St John's Parish. He also takes care of the plants in the Church.

Church Linen
This group washes and irons all linen required for the celebration of the Eucharist and all other Liturgical Services. It also prepares the Sacred Vessels for Holy Mass and other Liturgical Services. Another duty is to clean the Sacristy. The group must be ready to help the Parish Priest at short notice.
If you would like to volunteer to help in these essential tasks, Please contact our Parish Priest by phone or send a message via the Contact us page.
