Music at Saint John the Evangelist Parish
At Saint John the Evangelist Parish we are blessed with four music groups.
Vigil Mass Music Group
Vigil Mass Music Group [Saturday at 4.30pm]
The group currently consists of two guitarists, one bassist, one flautist and several singers. We aim to accompany the congregation in singing a good mix of traditional and newer hymns.
We generally practise in the Church from 4.30pm on a Saturday just before the Vigil Mass with additional practise sessions a few times per year for learning new music.
We are available to play at weddings and other Masses although we are limited to Saturdays and evenings as most of us are working or in full time education.
Anyone is welcome to join the Vigil Mass Music Group....and fear not. There would be no audition or test; no Simon Cowell style humiliation. We believe that everyone has a little bit of the X Factor in them! Our ethos is that we should glorify God by using the talents we have been given.
To join the Saturday Vigil Mass Music Group, please contact Anne Garry on 0141 587 5377.

12 Noon Mass Music Group
12:00 Noon Mass Music Group
The 12 o’clock Mass on a Sunday has a small choir that aims to :
- Lead the singing of hymns appropriate to the particular theme of the Mass of each Sunday.
- Sing the parts of the Mass – Lord Have Mercy etc.
- Provide a Cantor for the Responsorial Psalm and the Gospel Acclamation.
- Introduce appropriate new hymns.
Currently we are singing the entrance Antiphon set to a traditional Psalm tone. In so doing the theme of the Mass of the day is proclaimed and this replaces the entrance hymn.
After the hymn at Communion, we normally add a Reflection hymn or a motet or antiphon which we have learned during our weekly practice.
PRACTICE: Tuesday evening at 7:15pm lasting approximately one hour.
If you would like to join the choir you would be most welcome. We use sheet music and CDs to assist in learning new pieces so there is no need to be able to read music. Please think about joining - you will not regret it!
You can contact Michael Philliben (organist and choirmaster) by visiting the choir loft after 12 Mass, or by phone on 0141 580 9318 or email at mphillbar@gmail.com.

New Translation ChantsThe International Commission on English in the Liturgy [ICEL] have recently commissioned a set of Chants, some of which are in Latin as well as English. These chants are fully compatible with the words of the new translation of the Holy Roman Missal (2011) and thus are suitable for use during Holy Mass. The following mp3 tracks are sung by The Monks of Pluscarden Abbey, near Elgin, Scotland. Why not listen to them below and learn them for your full participation in the liturgy. |
