Our usual White Flower Appeals in parishes have been unable to take place for the last year. This is an important means to raise vital funds allowing us to defend the right to life, but it is also an opportunity for us to inform parishioners of the current issues around abortion. New Government policies, facilitating abortion, have made access to abortion easier than ever and have created a slippery path which many women have gone down, often with very little time to think or weigh up the gravity of their actions. Each abortion extinguishes a tiny human life, filled with potential and each of these is a tragedy in its own right. Sadly, these lost lives are overlooked and forgotten by a society that has become numb to the scale and malice of abortion. We want to remember each of these babies and pray that they are not forgotten but rather that their loss can compel us to save future victims of abortion. SPUC knows that the tiny baby is the primary victim of abortion, but we also understand that there are so many others affected by it. The medics and politicians who put the framework in place to destroy life are themselves damaged in conscience by what they do and we also know that women who are put under pressure to have an abortion, can often suffer mentally and/or physically for many years after the event. Our aim is to create a display of 14,000 flower images, one for every child lost to abortion in Scotland in one year. Bishop Toal will bless the physical display on Saturday, 22 May 2021 at Carfin Grotto when we create our ‘carpet of flowers for the unborn’. We are hoping that individuals will be willing to sponsor a virtual flower and these can be purchased online at www.whiteflower.org.uk Mary’s Meals Since our humble beginnings, Mary’s Meals, named after Mary the Mother of Jesus, has been built on a foundation of prayer and the many little acts of love from those who support us. This May, the month traditionally dedicated to Our Lady, we invite you to join us in prayer to celebrate the wonderful work of Mary’s Meals and give thanks that we are now reaching more than 1.8 million children with a nutritious meal in 19 countries every school day. We also pray for God’s continued blessing on our beautiful mission, that through His providence it will always flourish, enabling us to reach more hungry children. www.marysmeals.org.uk 20 Days for Life June 1st till June 20th (8am until 8pm each day) Due to Tier 4 restrictions our 2021 Lenten 40 Days for Life peaceful prayer and fasting vigil at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow was postponed. Confessions Saturday: 10:30am- 11am (St John’s/St Thomas) Saturday: 3:15pm-3:45pm (St John’s) Divine Mercy Sunday Jesus said to St Faustina (Diary No 699) “My daughter tell the whole world about My inconceivable mercy. I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls, and especially for poor sinners. On that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the Fount of My Mercy. The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. On that day all the divine floodgates through which graces flow are opened. Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet”. Jesus promises that the soul that’s been to Confession and receives Holy Communion will be completely wiped away of the two stains that are on our soul. Those stains are sin and the temporal punishment due to sin. The special grace promised by our Lord for Divine Mercy Sunday is nothing less than the equivalent of a complete renewal of baptismal grace in the soul. We will have at 3pm next Sunday, an afternoon of God’s Mercy with Adoration, the Divine Mercy Chaplet and the Sacrament of Reconciliation/Confession. 11th April Divine Mercy Sunday No evening Mass at 5pm because of the service at 3pm. This equates to £12,532 over the next month with restricted numbers at public masses. We can also try to advise on any ways to minimise expenditure. Your monthly standing orders from parishioners was £1,421 per month (pre-coronavirus) and have increased to £3,139 per month by February 2021 per BOS statement. SPRED Special Second Collection - 14 February 2021
Our Paisley Diocese SPRED offers people with learning disabilities: a personal friend who takes time to share life and faith, spiritual nurture in a small community of faith; and a sense of belonging to a parish community. Twenty-one SPRED groups meet in our church halls and special needs schools, allowing two hundred parishioners to come together in faith and friendship to share and experience God’s love. Sadly, our groups have not been able to meet in the past year due to the pandemic. Paisley SPRED supports three employees. In 2018 SPRED merged with the Diocese bringing in one-off restricted reserves of £95,492. Our SPRED boxes and Friends Campaign raised an additional £20,834 bringing the total income to £116,326. The Diocese also contributed £44,131 from our General Fund (pre-merger) and Papal & Episcopal Funds. With our expenditure of £72,221, SPRED restricted reserves ended the year at £88,235. Parish Finances At this time when we have limited access to the Church and have no public services our Parish income is greatly affected. The Parish and Diocese are dependent on your weekly donations to enable bills to be paid, to make repairs and maintain our church properties, as well as supporting the clergy and the ongoing pastoral work of our Parish and the Diocese. We calculate the potential loss of weekly income for St John Barrhead is around £2,892 per week. This equates to £12,532 over the next month with no/restricted numbers at public masses. St Thomas is £600 per week and so £2,800 over the next month. You may wish to consider a Standing Order to be paid directly to the parish account (weekly/monthly). You can download the form from the Parish websites (click here) or one can be posted to you. Thank you to all those who have recently moved to Standing Order so as to be able to support our finances regularly. Another way of helping the parish is by gift aiding your donations. If you are a tax payer Gift Aid increases your donation by 25%, your Gift Aid donation would be worth 25p more for every £1 donated. Click here to download the Gift Aid declaration. You can also donate to the Parish using the MyGivingHub facility provided by the Diocese, which allows you to make a single donation, set up a recurring donation and add Gift Aid if you choose. Ash Wednesday Ash Wednesday is this Wednesday the 17th of February, a day of Fasting (for those aged 16+) and Abstinence from meat (aged 14+). Fasting consists of one full meal per day, with two smaller meals that do not add up to a full meal, and no snacks. Those who have chronic illness, pregnant/nursing babies are exempt from fasting. New Parish Council Our New Parish Council have accepted their nominations, which were received during Advent. There are as follows Carmen Cassidy, Allana Connelly, Stephanie Barrett, Patsy Carlin, Lee Martin, Gerry Byrne, Stephen Callaghan, Peter Strain. Finance & Fabric Committee Kevin Brown, John Thomson, Phil Crampsie, Marion Carlton, Maureen Smith. Meetings will be set up soon via Zoom.
