                                                _September 2011 sees one of the most significant changes to the Holy Mass in a generation. From now on, the Holy Mass will be said using the New Translation of the Latin (Vulgate) into English. In this third edition of The Roman Missal all of the prayers we say in English will have a more literal translation corresponding to the original Latin texts.

                                                Following the Second Vatican Council, the Latin texts were translated into the vernacular, or common language, of particular regions. The first English translation of The Roman Missal was completed quickly in 1969. This edition aimed to capture more of the spirit of the texts rather than an exact literal translation of the Latin words. A further second revision of these texts occurred in 1975.

                                                However, in 2001 the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments - the liturgical commission in Rome - issued a document outlining the methodology and process for translating liturgical texts into vernacular languages. This document, Liturgiam Authenticum, called for a more literal translation of the original Latin, and so a group of scholars, poets, and theologians convened and worked painstakingly on providing a third English translation.

                                                The Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments announced recognitio (Statement of Acceptance) on April 30, 2010. Although these texts are not due to be formally implemented until the First Sunday of Advent, November 27, 2011, the Bishops' Conference of Scotland has instructed all parishes in the Diocese of Paisley to begin using the new English Translation from September 18 2011.

                                                All
                                                I confess to almighty God
                                                and to you, my brothers and sisters,
                                                that I have greatly sinned,
                                                in my thoughts and in my words,
                                                in what I have done and in what I have
                                                failed to do,
                                                through my fault, through my fault,
                                                through my most grievous fault;
                                                therefore I ask blessed Mary ever Virgin,
                                                all the Angels and Saints,
                                                and you, my brothers and sisters,
                                                to pray for me to the Lord our God.

                                                P.

                                                forgive us our sins,

                                                Credo

                                                All
                                                I believe in one God,
                                                the Father almighty,
                                                maker of heaven and earth,
                                                of all things visible and invisible.

                                                I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,
                                                the Only Begotten Son of God,
                                                born of the Father before all ages.
                                                God from God, Light from Light,
                                                true God from true God,
                                                begotten, not made, consubstantial
                                                with the Father;
                                                through him all things were made.
                                                For us men and for our salvation
                                                he came down from heaven,
                                                and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate
                                                of the Virgin Mary,
                                                and became man.

                                                For our sake he was crucified under
                                                Pontius Pilate,
                                                he suffered death and was buried,
                                                and rose again on the third day
                                                in accordance with the Scriptures.
                                                He ascended into heaven
                                                and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
                                                He will come again in glory
                                                to judge the living and the dead
                                                and his kingdom will have no end.

                                                I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
                                                who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
                                                who with the Father and the Son is adored
                                                and glorified,
                                                who has spoken through the prophets.

                                                I believe in one, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church.
                                                I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins
                                                and I look forward to the resurrection
                                                of the dead
                                                and the life of the world to come. Amen.

                                                We believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,
                                                the only Son of God,
                                                eternally begotten of the Father,
                                                God from God, Light from Light,
                                                true God from true God,
                                                begotten, not made, one in Being
                                                with the Father;
                                                through him all things were made.
                                                For us men and for our salvation
                                                he came down from heaven:
                                                by the power of the Holy Spirit
                                                he became incarnate of the Virgin Mary,
                                                and was made man.

                                                For our sake he was crucified under
                                                Pontius Pilate;
                                                he suffered death and was buried.
                                                On the third day he rose again
                                                in accordance with the Scriptures;
                                                he ascended into heaven

                                                and grant us peace and unity of your kingdom
                                                where you live for ever and ever.
