St Vincent de Paul Society: The SSVP provide spiritual, social and financial support to anyone in need. We visit parishioners of St John’s at their homes or in local care homes. If you know of anyone who might benefit from this offer from the members of the SSVP, please get in touch by calling: 075123 02877 or speak to one of our members after Mass who will be collecting for the Society in the porch.

Prayer to St Michael: St Michael the Archangel, defend us in the day of Battle; Be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God, cast into Hell, Satan and all the other evil spirits, who prowl through the world, seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

We pray for those who have died recently died: Antonio Crolla, Anthony Cusick, Josephine Day, Hilary Fernandes, Pauline Foy, John Joseph Higgins, Mary McHugh, Tommy O’Kane and Hugh Stewart.

The children get a chance to lead a decade and spend a few moments praying before the blessed sacraments in the presence of Our Lady and all the angels and saints. Families who  pray the rosary are showered with heavenly blessings.

ABC Tearfund Big Quiz Night (Friday 23rd October): Action for Barrhead Churches (ABC) are running their annual quiz for local churches. This will take place on Friday 23rd October at The Rest in Neilston, with the quiz starting at 7:00pm. Refreshments are available in the rest and people can buy their own drinks. You can form a team in advance (maximum of 4 people per team) or turn up on the night and be added to a team. A donation will be taken up on the evening in support of the work of Tearfund.

ABC Churches Together Event (Sunday 25th October): An organ concert at Bourock Church will take place on Sunday 25th October. All are most welcome.

UPDATE ON THE RESTORATION WORKS: The restoration work to the roof windows and walls has being going well, and we have been very pleased with the overseeing of the work by Jack Smith of KSN Project Management team, with Architect Alastair Tooze, and the Paisley Diocesan Property Manager George Crawford, and we have been very pleased with the work being carried out by Cairn Contractors. There has been no increase to the original costings to date. All the windows are being resealed and painted. The polystyrene beads which filled the cavity wall for insulation have been removed, as these were acting as a conduit for water ingress. It will not be long until the upper western wall will be re-plastered internally and painted, including the main western transept interior wall. The work has been delayed by about a month due to nesting wood pigeons on the roof, but happily they have gone now and the solar panels have been removed to finish some of the roof works around the lower slates on the western side of the church. We hope and pray that we will be back in the church for Christmas. The parish hall has served us very well in the meantime, for Masses, baptisms, weddings and funerals. We are very grateful to everyone in the parish who makes this possible, and we are happy that the groups who use the hall in the evenings have been able to continue uninterrupted, even though they have to rearrange the chairs every time they come in and then re-set them for the morning Mass the next day. It has all being going smoothly, thanks to everyone’s patient co-operation.
The Fundraising committee have organised a Fundraising Music event on Friday 30th October, to which everyone is welcome. Autumn Classical Concert (Friday 30th October): The Social Committee is delighted to host an Autumn Classical Concert on Friday 30th October at 7.00pm in the Church Hall. Light refreshments are included in the cost of the ticket. We are thrilled to welcome performances from Ciara Gaffney, Alasdair Ball and Libby Hunter for what promises to be a wonderful evening of music. Tickets will be £10 and will go on sale soon. All proceeds from the concert will go towards the Church Restoration Project, so please come along, enjoy an evening of beautiful music, and support this important cause. Tickets can be obtained using the QR code on the poster in the porch or contact Anna Marie on 07897405000. Tickets can also be purchased at the door on the night.

Legion of Mary, St John’s: The object of the Legion of Mary is the Glory of God through the holiness of its members developed by prayer and active co-operation in the work of Mary and the Church. The Legion sees its priority being the social and spiritual welfare of each individual. The members participate in the life of the parish through visitations of the elderly in their homes, hospitals and care homes and any other work that requires their support in the Church. Every legion is required to carry out a weekly apostolic work and to attend the meeting on a Monday evening at 7:00pm. Could this be you?

Diploma in Catechetics - Know the Faith and the Eucharistic Lord (January 2027): Registration will be opening in October for the Diploma in Catechetics (https://archedinburgh.org/register-for-the-diploma-in-catechetics-2027/), an on-line course run by the Archdiocese of St Andrews and Edinburgh which starts in January 2027. Over 36 weeks (from January-December 2027 with a July/August break) an understanding of the Catechism and Faith of the Church is deepened in weekly one hour on-line lectures and regular on-line mentoring with a designated tutor. The fee for the Diploma is £220 but the parish has a bursary. Contact Father John if interested.

Hall Toilets: Could all parishioners ensure when using the hall toilets that they are left clean and tidy. For the last few weeks, the men’s toilet has been left in a poor state and had to be thoroughly cleaned after the Vigil Mass. Please ensure also that young children are accompanied when using the facilities.

Car Parking: A cone will be placed at the entrance of the car park when the car park is full because space has to be left for emergency vehicles like ambulances and fire engines, and the priest on call. If you come later please do not use the car park during Mass.
